Leading with Responsibility: ATOM’s Green Initiatives

As global attention continues to shift toward climate resilience, industries across the world are becoming key players in driving sustainable progress. With increasing operational demands and growing expectations from stakeholders, businesses in every sector are taking meaningful steps to reduce their environmental impact.

As a leading telecom company in Myanmar, we found that the global telecom operators emitted around 1.7 billion tonnes of CO₂-equivalent emissions in 2019, accounting for roughly 2% of total global emissions. Based on these findings, improving energy efficiency and adopting sustainable practices have become fundamental principal. Recognising this important environmental challenge, ATOM keeps sustainable practices across every internal and external operation in a responsible business to support long-term environmental resilience.

Sustainable Practices

When sustainable actions come into force for business operations, the areas of managing waste, energy and resources have become a key priority. Offices and operations contribute significantly to carbon emissions and waste, from which e-waste is expected to more than double by 2050, spotlighting the wider supply chain responsible for a large share of emissions.

Green practices are more than essential, and it goes beyond being eco-friendly and is about building a sustainable future. Each of us has a role to play and when sustainability becomes part of everyone’s daily choices, from small habits to strategic decisions, it is possible to drive real, lasting change for our planet.

That is why ATOM, reflecting its commitment as a responsible business, prioritises practical, everyday actions such as energy conservation, paper reduction, recycling, and responsible resource management. To elevate these initiatives, we established an Environmental Management System (EMS), forming a dedicated core team, training internal auditors, and aligning processes with international standards. This structured approach led to our recent ISO 14001:2015 certification, demonstrating how individual commitment combined with systematic practices can deliver measurable environmental outcomes.

Energy-Efficient Practices

With energy demand rising steadily, there is an increasing focus on how companies manage their electricity use. Electricity consumption from data centers is expected to rise, and as network operators, we play a critical role in transitioning towards cleaner energy and reducing reliance on fossil fuels. The launch of our solar-powered tower sites has reduced diesel consumption, with these sites currently accounting for 40% of our self-built towers. We are also planning to launch a dedicated solar farm for our data center in Q1 2026, which is expected to reduce more than 1,500 metric tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions while significantly lowering fossil fuel usage. On the other side, our Environmental restoration efforts, including the planting of 1,000 trees across five acres in the Lower Sin Thay Reserved Forest in Takkone, Nay Pyi Taw, highlight the importance of balancing green infrastructure with renewed natural landscapes.

As operators worldwide assess environmental risks and work toward Net Zero targets, these combined actions demonstrate how thoughtful, data-driven strategies can support cleaner air, healthier ecosystems, and more resilient communities, setting a strong foundation for the continued green journey ahead.

A Continuing Commitment to a Greener Future

Environmental responsibility has become essential for the long-term resilience of the climate, while global research shows that energy demand in the sector will continue to rise in the years ahead. Strengthening environmental management systems, expanding the use of renewable energy, and integrating greener technologies are key steps that will shape a more sustainable path forward for the communities that rely on them. Real progress depends on more than technology or certifications. It also comes from the collective commitment of individuals who choose to act responsibly every day. If we continue to build on these efforts with consistency and purpose, the industry can move confidently toward a greener, more resilient future.
